"The medium is the message" because it is the medium that shapes and controls the scale and form of human association.
Understanding Media Marshall McLuhan loc. 412
In a culture like ours, long accustomed to splitting and dividing all things as a means of control, it is sometimes a bit of a shock to be reminded that, in operational and practical fact, the medium is the message.

… for what we call architecture is, in fact, a series of choices about what to keep, and the medium is the archive.

How it works
Three steps, then it's just there.
- 1
Sign in once.
A two-minute guided setup walks you through Kindle and, if you want, Notion.
- 2
Archi pulls them in.
Your highlights and notes live on your Mac. No servers, nothing uploaded.
- 3
Search by meaning.
Semantic + keyword search across every highlight. Find similar passages in one click. Send to Notion when you want it there.
In Notion
Send all your book highlights to Notion. The structure comes with it.
Archi writes two clean databases: a Library of books and a Passages store of highlights linked back to them. Searchable, sortable, yours.
- The medium is the message.
- All media exist to invest our lives with artificial perceptions.
- Societies have always been shaped more by the nature of the media…
| Title | Passages |
|---|---|
| Understanding Media | 84 |
| The Shallows | 41 |
| Amusing Ourselves to Death | 22 |
→ Each Library row links to its rows in the Passages database.
Questions
Common questions, briefly.
-
Does Archi work without Notion?
Yes. Notion is one optional destination. The local library is the product. Search, filter, and browse on your Mac without ever sending anything outward.
-
Why macOS only?
We don't support other platforms yet. Just macOS for now.
-
Is it free?
Yes. Archi is free and open source under the MIT license. No accounts, no upsell. If you want to support the project, you can buy me a coffee.
-
Where does my data live?
Only on your Mac, and in Notion if you send it there. There are no Archi servers, and no telemetry.
-
What's 'Cloud Notebook'? Is it required?
Cloud Notebook is Amazon's web view of your Kindle highlights at read.amazon.com/notebook. It's how Archi gets your data, and yes, it's required for now. You'll sign in to your Amazon account from within Archi.
